Painting/Decoupaging Wooden Owls

I love owls. Every time I see one I feel drawn to its cuteness. My grandma actually used to collect owls. I can remember going over to her house when I was really little and walking around counting how many were in her collection. It always seemed to increase from the previous time we were there.  The funny thing is that I never liked owls. I was intrigued that she collected so many of one thing, but I wasn’t at all drawn to them like I am today.

My mom and I came across these cuties below and I was so excited to do something with them!

Some painting and some decoupaging and these owls turned out fun and colorful!

The owls may be finished, but the final project is not. 🙂 So, stay tuned for another post!

Supplies:

• Small wooden owls (or other small critters)
• Acrylic paint colors of your choice
• Mod Podge
• Small Paint brushes
• Foam brush for decoupaging
• Scissors
• Hole Punch
• Drop cloth
• Scrapbooking paper of your choice
• Tray to pour your paint in

Directions:

• Lay down the drop cloth, so you can keep from making a mess on the surface you are placing it on.
• Choose what you want to paint, and do that first. It is much easier to decoupage over paint than to paint around decoupage. 🙂
• Let dry. You may need 2 or 3 coats.
• Use scissors and a hole punch to make shapes out of the scrapbook paper that you want to use.
• In order to make the open holes (that are the eyes and mouths and some of the feathers) have color, I decoupaged backwards. I turned the owl face down, brushed on a small layer of Mod Podge and then put the selected paper on it, smoothing it out. Make sure your glue layer is light, so that the paper doesn’t get ripples. Once you do this to all the owls, let dry for about 10 minutes. Then, apply a top coat of the Mod Podge over the scrapbook paper. Let dry and repeat once or twice.
• Flip the owls over and now you are ready to finish working on the front.  Use whatever scrapbook paper color and shapes you would like to finish decorating the owls. To do this, put a thin layer of glue on the part of the owl where you are going to place the polka dot, square, stripe, etc, and place the paper onto it, smoothing it out.
• When You have finished decorating each owl, now you need to put a top sealing coat onto each of them. To do this, brush some Mod Podge over the front of each owl. Let dry and repeat once or twice.
