Wrinkled Decoupage Canvas Art

If you search the internet looking for decoupage tips, you will constantly come across how to make something without wrinkles. That is something that can be difficult….those rascally wrinkles that you don’t want.

But what if you do want them? I couldn’t find anything on the internet about purposefully making wrinkles. Hmmm….does that mean that is not allowed when decoupaging? I liked my hubby’s wisdom on this. He said, “It is art Lori. There are no rules with art. It is your design.”

Normally I am all for the normal smooth decoupage. But not this time. This time I wanted to make something with texture. But I had an even greater reason for the wrinkles. I wanted them as a reminder. A reminder of my own wrinkles…my own brokenness. I want this reminder, because it points me to my great need for Christ and his redeeming work in my life.

I started with three blank canvases…

I wanted them to reflect the colors of the room….deep reds, orange, brown….

Here is a combined picture so that you can see the whole area. These walls are directly across from one another. I think these canvases go perfectly with the framed decoupage letter I posted about recently.

Supplies:

• Canvas sizes of your choice
• Mod Podge
• Scrapbook paper of your choice
• Scissors
• Fun patterned scissors (optional)
• Paint brush for Mod Podge
• Drop cloth or old sheet

Directions:

• Lay out the drop cloth/sheet. This will be your work station.
• Cut the scrapbook paper to completely fit where you want it on the canvas. When you have done that, put a lot of glue on the canvas and lay your paper down, making sure it has wrinkles. (If you don’t want wrinkles, then put a thin layer of glue and make sure to smooth your paper out before proceeding onward.)
• You can make it as basic or complex as you want. For instance, you can have one layer of paper or multiple. Mine is basically all one layer.
• When you have finished decoupaging everything onto your canvases and they have dried, you want to put at least one top coat, if not more onto them.
• If you want the wrinkled look, be very generous with the Mod Podge as you are painting it on top. You can do all different angles to give it an even more texturized look. For a smoother look, make sure you apply the glue in one direction, and apply a thinner coat.

Besides the awesome reminder to me of my need for God’s grace, I love the wrinkled look because it brings a fun texture to the room! What do you think?
